While there are many possible triggers for anxiety, all anxiety disorders arise from treating anxiety as if it were a disorder. When you use avoidance strategies to control your anxiety, you unintentionally train yourself to view anxiety as a threat. This leads to a vicious cycle in which increasing avoidance leads to increased anxiety.
Using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), you can think of anxiety differently and break the spiral of avoidance-anxiety. The first step is understanding how your threat system works and how it responds to your behavior. You will then start to see your anxiety in a new way and will learn new ways of approaching it.
Soon, you will no longer see anxiety as something to be dreaded. Instead, when your anxiety does spike, you will see an opportunity for learning, growth, and practice.
